The year of change

Reflecting back on this year, Travis and I have entitled 2011 "the year of change." So many wonderful and life changing events have occurred over the past twelve months. I almost feel like we have lived an entire lifetime in one year. Looking back, we feel so blessed to have had our family and friends along for the ride. We could not have done it without you! Thank you for your love, guidance and advice.

A look back at 2011...

We got engaged (well that was technically 2010, but close enough. I'm still counting it.)

I move from New York to California.

Saw the Grand Canyon for the first time.

MK, Ris and I had a brush with death en route.

Travis and I finally lived together for more than 2 weeks... and it was bliss.

We made incredible memories traveling all over the west coast.

Travis made it to Disney Land for the first time.

We planned a wedding in 5 months across the country.

I had a chance to celebrate my bridal shower and bachelorette weekend in Central NY.

Travis partied it up in Las Vegas with the boys.

Tied the knot July 23rd, 2011 on the St. Lawrence River.

Honeymooned for 10 days in Mexico.

Received new orders from the Marine Corps.

Moved 10 days after the honeymoon to Harrisburg, PA.

Attempted to buy our first house...and failed (think this one turned out for the best.)

Travis started a new job.

I interviewed and was finally accepted into PA school.

Celebrated our first Christmas together.

And in 5 days will be making my fourth move of the year to Potsdam, NY to attend Clarkson University.

Our 1st Christmas

The weekend before Christmas, Travis and I decided to celebrate our first Christmas together. We started on Friday night as soon as Trav got home from work with a date night. For dinner we made one of our favorites, a BBQ chicken pizza. Simple, easy and delish! Then it was off to the IMAX theatre to watch an early screening of Mission : Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The movie was definitely entertaining and we both enjoyed it, especially in IMAX.

The Capital

On Saturday morning we made a pot of coffee and drank it in bed with the pups. After, we came downstairs opened our stockings and a few presents. Travis opened up his big present from me, a new pair of Costas sunglasses as well as the board game Trivial Pursuit. Travis did a great job and really surprised me with a beautiful coffee colored crocodile Kate Spade tote for school!

Later that evening we drove down to Hershey to watch the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet  perform the Nutcracker.

At the show

And on Sunday we spent the day prepping and cooking our first Christmas feast! Travis brined the turkey on Saturday using an orange, beer and rosemary recipe. We also made mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, rolls, and cheesy onions (recipe curtesy of Gail Tufte). It was so much fun to spend time in the kitchen with Travis, listening to Christmas music and learning how to cook new dishes. I am thinking more of these dinners are in our future.

Moving up in the world.

A few weeks ago I upgraded both my phone and my number. I am now officially an iphone user... hooray!  I am still learning how to use it as well as well as all of the apps, but I am already obsessed with one... Instagram! This app allows me to take and instantly create beautiful pictures by adjusting filters and colors. The final products are unique and very retro. The camera on the iphone allows me to take pictures when I am not lugging around my SLR and camera bag. Here are some of my pictures so far. Oh, and be prepared there are going to be many more to come in the future.

The most gorgeous laptop case I have ever seen

So if I need glasses, they might as well be stylish right?

Adorable and eco-friendly binders by Green Room

Taber's Medical Dictionary...A MUST!

A 3M Littmann Stethoscope!

An adorable lap desk for doing work in bed or on the couch

Any other essentials I am missing?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

A few days after we cut down our tree, and we had let the branches "fall" we finally got to decorate. So we made some hot chocolate, put on our favorite Christmas play list and went to town. Then we settled onto the couch to enjoy our tree and watch a movie together. It was PERFECTION!

I am loving our first Christmas together so far. And we have so much more to look forward too.  The weekend before Christmas we are going to do our own little one. We can open A FEW of our presents, we are going to the Nutcracker and we are cooking a Christmas feast! Then the official holiday weekend we will be in Syracuse with my family.  After it is off to the River for the big Hannan Family Christmas. Be sure to look for pictures of Travis doing a polar swim in the St. Lawrence River. It is his year!

Oh many fun things to look forward to.

Stringing lights.

The finished product!

Christmas Traditions

To me Christmas is about family, friends, good times and traditions. One of my favorite traditions growing up was picking out our Christmas tree. In Syracuse, the entire family made the trek out into the country to pick our tree at a local family farm. It was always full of excitement, snow, and hot chocolate. Nothing is better then the smell of a fresh cut tree! Just the smell of pine brings back those feelings of nostalgia.  Last year in Rochester, when Travis was on his post deployment leave, we were able to pick and cut one down. This year Travis and I wanted to cut down our Christmas Tree and keep this tradition alive. We did some research and found a cute little family run tree farm outside of Harrisburg. We both wanted to get a tree as soon as possible so we went as soon as we got home from Minnesota, the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  That day it was about 60 degrees out! It was fun to skip the snow suits, boots, and freezing cold, but then again it felt a little wrong. Anyways, sans snow it was still fun.

A Midwest Tufte Thanksgiving

For Thanksgiving this year we went to visit Travis' family in Walker, MN.  We flew in to Minneapolis and met up with Travis' brother Conrad, went and grabbed burgers and beers then headed up to the cabin.  It was great to get up there get away for a few days and see everyone, enjoy some great food and maybe the occasional beer (or cider!).  We also started the first annual Tufte Turkey Shoot with some .22 pistols and a few old cans and some targets.

A big thank you to Gail, Doug, and Conrad for everything you did for us.

We had such a great time and can't wait to do it again.
